Minimum order at watch wholesalers: by units or by order value?
Updated: October 2026
Watch wholesalers set their minimum order in one of two ways: by value (spending at least a set amount in euros) or by units (buying at least a set number of watches, whatever they cost). At ChronoSave the minimum is 5 units per order, with no minimum order value, mixing brands and models freely, and your first order can be from 1 unit, at the same price and with no surcharge. This guide explains what each model means for a shop or an online store, and how to plan small, frequent orders without tying up capital.
What is a minimum order and why do wholesalers set one?
The minimum order is the smallest purchase a wholesaler is willing to fulfil. It exists because every order carries fixed costs that don't depend on its size: checking it, invoicing it, reconciling the payment, picking, packing and shipping it with tracking. Preparing an order for one watch costs almost the same as one for ten.
So the minimum isn't arbitrary: it lets a wholesaler keep wholesale prices without losing money on very small orders. What changes from one supplier to another is how it is measured, and that determines how much capital you put up every time you restock.
Minimum by value or by units: which works better for the buyer?
Many wholesalers set the minimum as an order value, often several hundred euros per order; others as a number of units. For the buyer, the difference matters more than it seems:
- Minimum by value. Pro: if you only want one or two expensive pieces, you can reach it with very few units. Con: it penalises entry-level brands. With modestly priced watches you need many units to hit the figure, and you end up buying more stock than you wanted to test.
- Minimum by units. Pro: the order value depends on what you choose; with entry-level models the order stays small, and if you can mix brands you spread the units however you like. Con: five high-end pieces make a large order, although you can offset this by combining one expensive piece with more affordable models.
For a shop that restocks often, or an online store that wants to test a new brand, a unit-based minimum is usually more flexible: you decide how much money you put into each order. If you are comparing suppliers, how to choose a watch wholesaler covers what else to check besides the minimum.
Is the minimum counted per reference or per order?
This is the detail that changes the numbers most. Some wholesalers require a minimum per reference or sell in fixed packs; others count the order as a whole. With a minimum of 5 units per reference, testing four models means buying 20 watches.
At ChronoSave the minimum is counted on the whole cart: 5 units in total, freely mixing brands and models. That can be five different models from five different brands, or two units of a model you already know sells plus three new ones.
How does the first trial order work?
Before committing capital to a new supplier, the sensible move is a small order to check the product, packaging, lead times and service. At ChronoSave it works like this:
- First order from 1 unit, any size you like.
- Same unit price as any other order, with no surcharge.
- Payment by bank transfer against a proforma invoice, just like every other order.
- From the second order on, the minimum is 5 units, with no exceptions.
That way you see the product in hand before you start ordering regularly. If your concern is buying online from a wholesaler you don't know yet, we cover it in is it safe to buy wholesale watches online?
How does the minimum order relate to volume discounts?
The minimum has to be read alongside the pricing policy. It is common to pair a low minimum with tiered discounts: you can buy small quantities, but you pay more per unit the smaller the order. The low minimum exists, but using it is expensive.
At ChronoSave there is one single price per product, whether you buy 5 units or 500: no volume tiers and no turnover targets. For a shop that buys little and often, this means your margin doesn't depend on the size of the order and you have no incentive to overbuy. You buy what you are going to sell. Practical example: how much does a 5-unit order cost?
Wholesale prices are only visible with an account, so we don't give per-model figures here, but we can give you the order of magnitude:
- 5 entry-level models: the leanest possible order today comes to roughly €270 + VAT.
- 3 entry-level models + 2 mid-range: the total goes up, but it remains a modest order and lets you test two price bands at once.
- One or more high-end pieces (for example, TAG Heuer or Gucci): the total rises noticeably with each piece.
Shipping is added on top: a single flat rate for all of Europe, shown in the cart before you confirm. Prices are shown in euros, exclusive of taxes unless stated otherwise. With an account you see the B2B price, recommended retail price, margin and stock on every product page, so you know the total before committing.
How should a shop or online store plan small, frequent orders?
- Test before you commit. Use 5-unit orders to test new brands and models, measure what sells and reorder only what works.
- Diversify every order. Mix brands and price bands instead of buying five units of the same model: with the same capital you learn more about your customers.
- Plan for the real lead time. It is 15 to 20 business days from payment confirmation, not from when you place the order. Reorder before you run out and don't list models you don't have in hand yet.
- Build the transfer into your schedule. Payment is by bank transfer only, against the proforma you receive by email; the order is prepared once payment is confirmed.
- Track every shipment. You receive the tracking number by email as soon as the order leaves the warehouse. Shipping within the EU, no customs: details in shipping and lead times.
Minimum order FAQ
Are there watch wholesalers with no minimum order?
It's uncommon: almost every wholesaler sets some kind of minimum, by value or by units, because every order has a fixed handling cost. At ChronoSave the lowest-friction option is the first order, from 1 unit at the same price and with no surcharge; from the second order on, the minimum is 5 units, with no minimum order value.
Can I mix brands and models to reach the minimum?
Yes. The 5 units can be split however you like across the 14 brands in the catalog (Seiko, TAG Heuer, Tissot, Armani Exchange, Hugo Boss, Burberry, Diesel, Fossil, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Maserati, Mido, Citizen and Emporio Armani) and their more than 3,500 references. Every watch is 100% original, with its documentation and packaging.
Is the 5-unit minimum per reference?
No. It is counted on the whole cart, so you can order five different references, one unit of each.
Is there a minimum order value?
No. ChronoSave has no minimum order value in euros: the only requirement is the number of units. All purchase conditions are in the FAQ.
